Name That Tune!

LA Daddy | May 12

I’m a new capo to the Blogfathers site, so I’m not sure if we’ve ever given out a meme or a theme or anything like that. So, I’ll just assume ignorance is bliss… ‘Cause here I go:

My daughter is my life. But my 2nd greatest passion is music. I love music. Music is my memory. I can hear a song and be transported back in time to a better… or even a worse place. But it always evokes a feeling.

I want to throw out a “music meme.” What does this have to do with parenting? Trust me… music will be a BIG part of your child’s life. Music helps you remember what it’s like for your kid — at almost any age. Music is youth because it’s all about anger, love, emotions, rebellion, sex and… well, basically, music is all about being young.

And I want to know more about you. From when you were young…

I want you to answer these questions and take them to your blog and put your answers there. I want this to be a permanent record of what you remember — what made you feel, what influenced you… in other words: what made you hip. Because your kids are never going to believe you were once — gasp! — young!

What song do you hear that takes you back to high school?

You want my answers? Oh. Okay. I’ll play along. For me - it was Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall. That sooooo reminds me of high school and how much I hated it…

What song do you hear that really fills you full of regret?

From a personal experience… every time I hear Pictures of You from The Cure, I’m reminded of a bad experience and some bad choices in my life.

What song restores your faith in humanity?

Everybody Wants to Rule the World from Tears for Fears. Despite the prophetic title, the song is so upbeat that I can’t help believe we have hope and some sort of a… chance. Although, the realist in me says that’s a bunch of crap.

What song truly makes you smile?

Dock of the Bay from Otis Redding. It gets me every time. I sway and smile and sing along each time I hear it.

What song can’t you wait to play for your kid?

Honestly? Blister in the Sun from the Violent Femmes. What a fun, kick-ass dance song!

What song didn’t used to mean anything to you… and now it really does make an impact?

Love Vigilantes from New Order. I heard this song way back in college, when there was no war going on. And now that I have a child, it really hits home. Here is a sample of the lyrics:

From the land of the sun
From a war that must be won
In the name of truth
With our soldiers so brave
your freedom we will save
With our rifles and grenades
And some help from God
I want to see my family
My wife and child waiting for me
I’ve got to go home
I’ve been so alone, you see

What song takes you back to college?

It’s tie. Lips Like Sugar from Echo & the Bunnymen and Superman from R.E.M.

What song would be the first song on your iPod if you were stranded on a desert island?

Another tie! Three Little Birds from Bob Marley and Subterranean Homesick Alien from Radiohead.

What band influenced you the most?

It’s a toss-up. But I’ll make a decision. For me, it was Jane’s Addiction. Nirvana really took my breath away, but Jane’s made me stand up and take notice. I couldn’t stop buying CDs after Nothing Shocking came out.

Inquiring minds want to know! Put it in the comments or track-back to your blog! I really want to know…

Update: Jefferson Street Realist picked up on this meme and posted his answers on his blog! Paige at The Avery Lane Experience decided to play along!

7 beefs about Name That Tune!

  1. That’s great - I’ve actually been thinking about kids and music a lot lately, since my wife and I are midway through the adoption process. We’re trying to think of great songs that could work as well for kid’s songs… though I’m not opposed to Raffi if that’s what he digs.

But still… a co-worker told me that her 4-year old son’s favorite song is “Whip It,” by Devo, and I couldn’t help but think “Man, that’s so cool.”

  2. Sorry, I haven’t been to the Blogfathers site in awhile, so I’m almost a week late with this. Here you go: http://www.jeffstreet.com/2007/05/name-that-tune.html

  3. […] If you’re interested, I’ve got a “music meme” up at The Blogfathers site. Let me know if you answer the questions. Jefferson Street Realist picked up on it and posted his answers here. […]

  4. For someone who has made a career out of music, I somehow seem to have gotten myself into a listening rut - for oh, the last 20 years or so. Maybe it’s because I’m so busy making it, I don’t have time to listen to it.

I really need to update my iPod.
