Parenting, The New Black

Genuine | July 14

I have been recently discussing Celebrity Dads on my blog.  Not the typical look at Dads like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or the rest of  what I’m coining “Fad Dads”, but people you may not think of as fathers.  It seems that parenting is the next big thing in Hollywood.  Celebrities are now all wanting to be the next one to get pregnant or adopt a child.  Don’t get me wrong, I know everyone should have the right to be a parent, but I hope that they are doing it for the right reasons.  It seems to me that right now you have publicists everywhere hoping that their celebrity client’s slip one by the goalie so that People Magazine can do a photo shoot of that darling bundle of joy.

Standing in the checkout lane at the local grocery store, you can hardly see any publication without a picture of celebrities and their babies, or in the case of Tom and Katie, no pictures.  My own thought is that Tom Cruise put Suri on the spaceship.  Is the media frenzy driving the birthing of these celebrity children?  I hope not.  The media seems to be caught up in bump watching these days and if you are not pregnant, chances are the Paparazzi is not standing on your doorstep, or if they are, you better run out and get that pregnancy test at the drug store.

Is parenting the new black?

5 beefs about Parenting, The New Black

  1. I always cringe when I see those. Working in Hollywood, I know allot of those are more for free media publicity rather than for the joy of just wanting to be a parent.

  2. The whole obsession over celebrity culture irritates the hell out of me, to be honest. I suppose it’s no less silly than my obsession over sports culture, but it just irritates the heck out of me for some reason. Parenting being a fad with them doesn’t surprise me in the least, since there seems to be an audience for it.

  3. This comes and goes in cycles like everything else. Remember back when Demi was dating sleeping with people her own age (as opposed to her children’s age)? The pregnant Covers on magazines and such? You are always going to have periods when some group of people hit that stage of “and the clock is ticking like THIS” {stomp} {Stomp} {Stomp}.

Soon, it will be on to other topics, and trends again… until the next group is ready.

  4. On the other hand, did you see the interview with Brittany Spears? Seriously, I felt really bad for the poor girl. Here’s someone who has been handled for most of her life, never having to think for herself (and it shows) who now is struggling to be a “normal” young parent. I really think she is trying to get it, but lacks the mental resources and practical knowledge to escape the drama.

As for Tom and Katie…I vote for the spaceship theory.

  5. The problem is that there is a big difference between having babies and being a parent, and they only seem to push having babies - not to mention the lack of anything to do with actually staying with the man that put the bump in your belly . . . you know.
