The Best Defense Is A Good Offense

Because I'm Your Father | February 23

My son (who, by the way, is the best son in the world, regardless of what I’m about to tell you, and who is still way better than your son, or daughter for that matter :-P) is just about 15 months old. Over the course of the last few weeks, he has started to throw the occasional temper tantrum. Now, this is a development that BIYM and I have been expecting for some time, so much discussion has taken place with regards to how we would handle these outbursts.

We hadn’t really agreed upon a good solution, until we saw this.

After watching, we each admitted to having privately tested the tactic, and discovered a common success. So, it’s been officially added to the BIYFamily parental repertoire. You should totally try it.

10 beefs about The Best Defense Is A Good Offense

  1. For some reason the link isn’t working for me in linux. Is there an alternate site or a mirror?

  2. Oh how I have thought of doing that. My kid would just yell NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and be really embaressed.

    Hmmmm…..

  3. Here is the link to the entry page:

It would appear that Flash v.8 is required to view it.

  4. And Macromedia has not deigned to give us a Flash Player 8 for Linux:

  5. You’re right your kid is better than mine. Yeah, I had you beat right up to the word occasional.

  6. I have tried that, but only in the privacy of my own home. and it does work occaisonally. Usually, actually. THey see what a retard you are and just forget they were mad in the 1st place.

  7. I used to do that to my kids all the time - worked every damn time!!!!

  8. The best is the look that the mom gives the child after she throws a tanturm herself.

I’ve never gone to that extent before. I’ve usually gone the “echo” route - repeating every whiny thing my son said in the exact same tone. It usually ends the whining and makes him laugh.

But throwing yourself down on the floor? Hm. Maybe not. But perhaps. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps….

  9. I can site prior-art … reportedly my Dad did that with me some 27 years ago or so when I was 2-ish … right there in the aisles of Toys-R-Us … he got right down on the floor and had a full-fledged tantrum himself. Reportedly I stopped my tantrum and told my mom “Daddy’s silly” and my tantrum was over … and if necessary, I’m willing to do the throw down myself with my little one …

  10. I have been employing this technique for years. I am glad to see Hollywood is catching on.
My wife watched the clip three times and laughed hysterically each time
